Dorothy Nicholson

Nicholson: Dorothy Hazel (McMurtry), age 87 of Swift Current passed away on December 18th, 2015 in Swift Current. The funeral service was held at 11:00am on Tuesday, December 22nd from Warren's Funeral Home with Reverend Annette Taylor officiating. Zeke McMurtry read a eulogy about Auntie Dot from stories told to him by Dorothy's nieces and nephews. The interment will be held at a later date at Memory Gardens. Dorothy is survived by her spouse, Earl of 62 years, son Ken, step-granddaughter Shivawn (Adam); daughter Nancy Thingelstad (Kim), grandsons Ory (Amy) and Tyson. One brother Earl McMurtry and 2 sisters Doreen French and Rose Rhodes plus numerous nieces and nephews. Dorothy was born on the farm, north east of Swift Current. She went to Northview School and then to Beattie to complete her schooling. She worked at the Swift Current Health Region. In June 1952, Dorothy and Earl were married. They moved to Morse to start their own farm. Dorothy loved her life on the farm, she was a wonderful cook, enjoyed sewing and gardening. She raised ducks, geese, chickens and was a bee keeper. She enjoyed having both dogs and cats as pets on the farm. Dorothy enjoyed travelling, she and Earl travelled around the world twice and visited every Continent. They also enjoyed many trips in their motorhome, touring both Canada and the United States. Dorothy worked hard and was able to play hard. While in Morse she was active in Brownies and Girl Guides, known to many as Brown Owl, member of the Royal Purple and U.C.W. In 1993, Dorothy and Earl moved to Swift Current. She then became active with the Eastern Star. Dorothy was a special lady and will be missed by many.
