Abercrombie/Trenton - It is with great sorrow we announce the death of Allan Lawrence “Slugger” Cooke, 78, of Abercrombie formerly of Trenton, at the Aberdeen Hospital on Jan. 9, 2016.
He was a son of the late Matthew and Mary (Fraser) Cooke.
Born and raised in Trenton, he spent his last years in Abercrombie. He was a long-time employee of Hawker-Siddeley Punch and Shears Dept. It is a blessing to have shared in his life. He was a father, grandfather, husband, brother, uncle and friend beyond compare.
Allan was a man who loved the outdoors, the beach, fishing, hunting and sitting by the fire telling and listening to great stories and he loved to share a cup of tea and his time with all who would sit and chat a while.
He is survived by his wife Anne Royles; his children: Wendy (David) Archibald, Thorburn; Tracey (Eddie) Fortune, Hillside; Odessa (Raymond) Fraser, Hillside; Darrell (Sharon) Beattie, Eureka; Clifford (Shirley) Beattie, Barrie, Ont.; Gordon (Joey) McInnis, Atlanta, GA; David (Donna) Royles, Egypt Rd.; John (Dee) Royles, Riverton; his grandchildren: Joel and Amelia Archibald; Laurie, Aaron and Crystal Fortune; Corey Fraser; Shawn Beattie; Colin and Jason Beattie; Joanna and Rhonda McInnis; Corey Royles; Haley, Hillary and Kaitlyn MacDonald; great grandchildren: Ava, Lincoln, Abby, Carter and Chloe; his sisters: Anne Melanson, New Glasgow; Katherine (Garfield) Holland, Scarborough, Ont. He was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews on both the Cooke and Jenkins side. He was a friend to many, good people who gave him great stories to share; a special mention to his life-long friend, John Tupper.
He was predeceased by his stepmother, Kay (MacAdam) Cooke; his brothers, Donnie and Billy Cooke; his sisters, Lois Cahoon and Joyce MacDonald. A grateful and heartfelt thank you to the nurses at the Dialysis Unit of the Sutherland-Harris Memorial Hospital in Pictou and Dr. Spencer Barclay. He will be truly missed.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, Trenton. Funeral mass 11 a.m. Wednesday in Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, New Glasgow, with Father Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial will be in Christ the King Cemetery. Family flowers only.
