We regret to announce the passing of our husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Kevin Leo Blinkhorn, 76, of Sydney Mines, on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016, after a short illness.
Born in Sydney Mines on April 21, 1939, he was the son of the late James and Anne (MacLean) Blinkhorn.
He was a member of Holy Family parish (previously St. Pius X ) in Sydney Mines.
He worked for many years as a stevedore at Marine Atlantic in North Sydney. In his earlier years he worked as a taxi driver, a truck driver, a window, driveway and siding salesman, and as a potter for the Mad Potters of Sydney Mines. Growing up he played on many hockey teams and played baseball for the Black Point Shamrocks. He loved boxing and wrestling and collected many books over the years. He coached baseball and hockey for many years, and he was a loyal, die-hard Toronto Maple Leafs fan. He also founded the Rovers Horseshoe in Sydney Mines where he and his sons won many tournaments including the Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and Maritime Championships.
He is survived by loving wife of 55 years, Marie (Bailey); sons, Kevin Jr. (Elizabeth), Robbie (Debbie); daughters, Ann Marie (Kate) and Wendy (Brian). Also left to mourn are his eight grandchildren, Jillian, Tyler, Trevor (Soleil), Courtney (Aaron), Kyle, Travis, Jason and Cody; great-granddaughter Liliana, and another one arriving in April. Also surviving is his sister Doreen, brother Bernard, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by son Bernard, sisters, Anna Mae, Greta and Wanda, and brothers James and Joseph.
Kevin's family would like to thank the Northside General nursing staff on the 5th floor, the sitters who watched over him, and Dr. Eugene Ignacio.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Kevin's memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
Visitation for Kevin Blinkhorn will be held today (Friday, January 15, 2016) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. The funeral mass will take place Saturday at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. James Oliver officiating.
