With sadness, we announce the passing of our wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Vera Purcell, age 88.
Vera passed away on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, at Celtic Court Nursing Home, Sydney.
Born in Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late Herb and Elsie (Newman) Burden and was a member of St. Anne’s Parish, Glace Bay.
Vera was employed for several years at our local fish processing plant, and while living in Glace Bay, she was a longtime resident of Mechanic Street and the Valley View Seniors Complex. She will be fondly remembered for all the loving moments spent with her children and her extended family, her family was her life.
Vera will be sadly missed by her loving son Reg (Ann Denise), Glace Bay; siblings, Dorothy, Jim (Rose Mary) and Leslie (Helen), all of Newfoundland; cherished grandchildren, Marie, Patrick, Cecil, Nicole, Vanessa; great-grandchildren, Jamie, Sara, Hannah, Nicholas, Bethany; daughters-in-law, Beatrice, Brenda, Mary; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Patrick, sons, Lloyd, Piearce, Paul, siblings, Ephraim, Edward, Reg, Hilda and Clarice.
In honoring her wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016, from 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20 in the funeral home chapel, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will take place in St. Anne’s Cemetery at a later date.
At this time we would like to sincerely thank the entire staff at Celtic Court for the loving and compassionate care given to Vera.
