Elva SMITH

SMITH, Elva E.
Durham

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of a wonderful wife, loving mother and devoted grandmother, Elva Elizabeth (Robley) Smith passed away peacefully January 18, 2016, in the Palliative Care Unit of Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Durham on March 23, 1931, she was the youngest daughter of the late Rod & Eva (Watters) Robley of Durham. She attended the one room school in Cross Roads, Rogers Hill and completed her schooling at Pictou Academy, obtaining a Business Course Certificate. From there she worked as a secretary at Ferguson Industries, and after raising her family, returned to work for Department of Social Services, from where she retired in 1991. Elva was very active in church functions while living in Pictou and continued so when she moved back to Durham. She was a dedicated member of the West River Presbyterian Church in Durham, the Ladies Guild and the choir. She was always busy knitting and baking for wherever it was needed and really enjoyed giving the grandchildren their favorite cookies, etc. She was always so proud of her family’s accomplishments; they were ‘number one’ in her eyes. She loved music, especially ‘old time’, so every Saturday night you’d find Harold and her at an old time dance. Elva will be missed by her husband of 64 years, Harold; son, Richard (Patti), Calgary; daughters, Lynn (Gregor) and Heather (Ken), Pictou; brother, Waldo, Fort Erie, Ontario and grandchildren, Sarah, Scott, Thomas and Eva Jessie, her precious little great-granddaughter, Evangeline “Eva”; sister-in-law and great friend, Marg; sisters-in-law, Donna, Winnipeg; Inez (Dennis), Morrisburg, Ontario and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 PM Thursday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral will take place 11 AM Friday from West River Presbyterian Church, Durham, with Rev. Norman Marple officiating. Spring burial will be in Seaview Cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations in her memory may be made to the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit. www.mclarenfuneral.ca
