Douglas "Doug" John  Nelson

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas "Doug" John Nelson, age 79, of Whitby, ON, formerly of Nappan, NS. Doug passed away peacefully at the Lakeridge Health Centre in Oshawa on Monday, January 18, 2016.
Born in Fenwick, NS, he was a son of the late Aubrey and Violet (Smith) Nelson.
He spent his working career at the Experimental Farm in Nappan. Doug loved to play darts, cards, and bingo. He enjoyed summers in Lorneville at the beach. If you were building anything from a birdhouse to a barn, Doug was there to help. He was a life member of Lodge #11 of the Knights of Pythias, and was a member of the Amherst Sgt's Mess.
He will be dearly missed by his children Brian (Katherine), Dartmouth, Angela (Bob) MacKay, Nappan, and Beverly (Tim) MacAloney, Chignecto; 6 grandchildren, Christopher, Cold Lake, AB, Mary (Gordon) Howard, Bedford, Sara and Ben MacKay, both of Nappan, Alexander Moore (Jasmen), Amherst, Patrick Moore, Chignecto; long time companion June Kozlenko and her family, Whitby, ON; siblings Bert, Amherst, Shirley Arsenault, Bright, ON; Kensil, Halifax, Owen (Shirley), Brookdale, twin sister Dorcas MacEachern, Amherst and Stanley (Carol), Toronto; sister in law Elizabeth Nelson, Brookdale, Sheila Nelson, Brookdale, Eleanor Nelson, Amherst; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Shirley Adshade, siblings Audrey (Ernie) Coates, Hilton (Moira), Laurie, Alden and Leonard.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst, NS (902-667-8777) where visiting hours will take place on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. The funeral service for Doug Nelson will take place at Furlong~Jones Funeral Home on Sunday, January 24, 2016 at 2 pm, Rev. Marion Lloy officiating. Burial will take place in the Fenwick Cemetery in the spring.
