Margaret "Mel" Imelda

MacLEAN, MARGARET IMELDA "MEL"
Aylesford, NS - Margaret Imelda “Mel” MacLean passed away peacefully at the Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville, NS on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at the age of 84, surrounded by her family. Born and raised in New Glasgow, NS. She was the daughter of the late Hugh Ryan and Margaret Lewis and is survived by Bill Ryan, one of nine siblings.
Mel completed her nursing training at St. Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish, NS. In 1953, she married William MacLean of Antigonish, who predeceased her in 1987. They moved throughout the Maritimes during their life together, settling in Riverview, NB in 1969. Mel worked as a nurse for many years in Obstetrics and family practice, and raised a family of seven (Martha, Bryan, Gary, Greg, Margie, Monica and Frank). She contributed to churches as an accomplished organist and choir director at Immaculate Heart, Holy Family and St. Bernard’s. Mel also contributed to her community in so many ways, as a founding member of the Coverdale Senior Citizens Club, as a past-president and lifelong member of the Catholic Womens’ League, and as a two-term member of the NB Health Services Advisory Council. In these roles she touched a multitude of lives. In her ‘spare time’ she composed hymns, was an avid golfer and was a president of the Ladies’ Division at Mountain Ridge. Mel was still golfing in her 81st year. ‘Nanny Mel’ was cherished, and will be lovingly remembered by her children, grandchildren and especially by her five great-grandchildren, as well as her many nieces and nephews.
The family gathered this week to share and celebrate memories of Mel. A visitation, funeral service and interment is being planned for mid May, 2016 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Moncton, NB. The final date to be announced. At that time she will be laid to rest beside her husband Will.
As Will would say, “Wasn’t she something!”
A warm and grateful thank you to the wonderful nursing and medical staff who helped out with her care over these many months.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation or your favourite charity.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. On-line condolences and inquiries may be directed to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com.
