Gerry Donovan passed peacefully away on January 19, in his 57th year, at home in the presence of his loving family. Gerry was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Mary Donovan. Left with sad hearts, but fond and happy memories, are his loving and devoted wife, Gillian, and treasured son, Callum. He also leaves to mourn his sisters Trudy (Joe) Coyle, Marie (Neil) Elliott and Patsy (Eric) Bryant; sisters-in-law Alison (Don) Powell and Fiona Grant (Bruce Sheppard); nieces and nephews, Siobhan, Teague and Sinead Coyle, Christopher (Krista) and Michelle (Greg Nastiuk) Elliott, Joshua (Carissa), Jeremy (Laura), Matthew and Andrew (Vanessa) Bryant, Alexandra Grant, Carl and Ian Sheppard, and Sari and Kati Piros (Powell); great-nieces Sophie, Kate, Isla and Quinn; very special Aunts Camille Bruce and Assumpta Roche and Uncle Stan Tomkins, and many cousins. Gerry developed many friendships over the years, both on a professional and athletic level and as a result many devoted friends and colleagues are saddened at his passing. Throughout his lifetime, he made numerous contributions to sport in Newfoundland as both an athlete and a builder. A 30 year member of the triathlon community, he was also an avid runner, competing locally, provincially, nationally and internationally, a cyclist, a cross-country skier and a rower in the St. John's Regatta. He had a kind and generous spirit, a smile for everyone, loved to tell a good story, or play a practical joke. He fought the brave fight with a positive attitude, and entered his final race with strength and dignity. Gerry's family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Percy Crocker, Dr. K. Laing, Dr. Karen Downton and nurse Dawn Clarke who provided exceptional and compassionate care. Visitation will take place at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road, on Friday January 22, 2016 from 1 - 5 pm and 6 - 9 pm. Mass of Christian burial will take place at St. Pius X Church on Smithville Crescent on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 1 p.m.. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in his honour to the Canadian Cancer Society.
