Passed peacefully away at Masonic Park in the presence of her loving family on the 23rd of January 2016, Aileen Joseph Ryan Foley (nee Burnstein), age 97, of St. John's, NL. Born on December 15, 1918, Aileen was the daughter of Joseph Burnstein, who opened First Ladies Tailor Shop in St. John's in 1904, and Helen (Ezekiel) Burnstein from Harbour Main. On September 19, 1940, Aileen married Gordon B. Ryan of St. John's. Widowed for 12 years she married Bernard Foley of St. John's in 1990. Preceding her in death besides her parents and husbands were her brothers Francis and Samuel Burnstein, her sisters Mariam Michael, Sylvia Grossman, Isabella Martens, Pellina Delaney and her granddaughter Cathy Ryan-McKeown. Aileen leaves with loving memories and an abundance of funny stories: three children, sons Gordon Ryan (Gloria) of St John's, Leo Ryan (Alvina) of Quispamis, NB, and daughter Carol Ann Ryan-Paton (Arthur Ventre) of Stuart, Florida. Also leaving to mourn is her only living sister Thelma Hesselink of Dundas, ON, cherished grandchildren Jo-Anne Dowden (Brian), Sandra Donovan (Kerry), Gordon Ryan (Denise), (and their mother Catherine Hodder), Lori Ann Bryden (Kurt), and David Ryan (Tara); nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and members of the Foley family, especially her devoted step-son John Foley (Colleen). The family would also like to thank the staff of Masonic Park for the exceptional care they provided over the last three years. We are forever grateful. Viewing will be held at Caul's Funeral Home on LeMarchant Road on Monday, January 25th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Memorial Service at Caul's Chapel on Tuesday, January 26th at 11 am. Interment to follow at a later date at Mount Carmel Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or a donation may be made in Mom's memory to the CNIB. Rest in Peace Mom. You will be greatly missed.
