Born in Glenelg, Guysborough County, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Jean (Fisher) Hattie.

She also sang in the choir, and was an active leader in the AMS and Rose Auxiliary. In her community she faithfully served in the Home and School, Women’s Institute, and Sunlight Rebekah Lodge.
Ethel was gifted in a variety of crafts including knitting, crocheting, quilting, beading, and took pleasure in baking for the enjoyment of her family and community. At the RK she continued to enjoy her knitting and colouring.
