Merle Shmigelsky

The family of Merle Shmigelsky wishes to announce her passing on
January 21, 2016, at her place of residence, the Saskatoon Extendicare on Preston Avenue. Jean Kathleen Merle Scott was born September 8th,
1920 in the small farming community of Lily Plain Saskatchewan, located
just west of Prince Albert. As the second youngest of seven siblings, Merle really enjoyed life on the family farm and worked hard during some very challenging years. She met her husband-to-be, Dymtro (Dick) Shmigelsky, a student/farm hand working right next door and the two were married May 8th, 1954. Dick had earned his law degree from the U of Saskatchewan and the decision was made to move to Saskatoon where he could build his law practice. They had two daughters, Karen and Barbara. The family had been enjoying their new life when Dick died suddenly in 1973. Merle decided to remain in the family home on Underwood and was determined to make sure that their two daughters completed their education and became independent young women. In 2003 Merle moved first to Luther Towers, then to the Luther Intermediate Care facility and finally to Extendicare. Merle made many friends along the way and took part in most if not all of the activities taking place, even though she had been rendered legally blind due to an eye ailment. Up until the day of her passing she was bright and cheerful, always looking forward to the next visit from her daughters and grandchildren, all of whom were devoted to her as she was to them. Her family was always her first concern and delight. Merle is survived by her daughters, Karen (Tony) Caixeiro of Medicine Hat, their children Angelina, Carly and David, and Barbara (Jeff) Braid, her children Kaitlyn (Jeremy) Bzowy, and Jillian LaRose, all of Saskatoon. She was predeceased by her parents Emma and Rudolph Scott, husband Dymtro (Dick) Shmigelsky, siblings Viola, Bud, Allan, Dolly, Percy and their spouses, and Jim Scott (Chris Scott of Saskatoon). The Funeral Service was celebrated by Fr. Ken Watts on Saturday January 23rd at Holy Trinity Church on 33rd. The Internment followed at WoodLawn Cemetery in the family plot. The family wishes to thank the staff at Extendicare for making the last year of mom’s life as fulfilling as it was.
