We regret to announce the sudden passing of Edie Johnson, 83, of Sydney Mines, on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Sydney Mines on May 1, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Jerry and Elizabeth (Donovan) Whitty. She was a member of the former St. Pius X parish.
Edie loved to play bingo, on Friday night, and on TV. She also loved music, and telling stories. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Alex; her daughter, Mary Elizabeth; son Alex (Thelma) and her grandchildren, Erkki, Sara and Sam. Also left to mourn are her sister, Charlotte, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her grandson, Alex Jr.; sisters, Ollie, Sissy, Annie Jane and Veronica; brothers, Lawrence and Steve and stepbrothers, Jack McGean and Rob McGean.
Her family would like to send special thanks to the McGean, Clarke, MacLeod and Dormiedy families, and also special thanks to Dr. Andrew Wawer and staff, and the nurses on 4th Floor, Northside General Hospital.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be held Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, at 2 p.m. in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. James Oliver officiating.
