BATT, PHYLLIS "PHYL" MAY
1917 - 2016
The death of Phyl Batt of Fredericton, NB occurred at the Veteran's Health Unit on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Phyl was born in Cabano,‎ Quebec to the late Charles and Eunice (Johnson) Batt and in 1921 the family moved to Fredericton.
At the age of 4, Phyl started singing in the Wilmot United Church Youth Choir and sang in the choir until 2013. She was also active in many aspects of the church and remained a member of the congregation until her death.
In 1938 Phyl graduated from UNB and enrolled in nursing at the University of Toronto. After achieving her RN she undertook speciality studies and worked in the Fracture Room at the Toronto General Hospital.
In February 1944 Phyl joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps as a Lieut.‎ Nursing Sister with specialized Operating Room training at Montreal's Royal Victoria Hospital June to October 1944. She was shipped to the European Theatre in January 1945 and served in England during WW II. This photograph of Phyl was taken in London around the date of VE day, which she celebrated in London's Times Square.
She returned to Canada in 1946 and served as a Lt.‎ NS in the Army Reserve until 1949 when she was hired as a Public Health Nurse for the Province of New Brunswick. She subsequently took courses in Public Health and Public Health Administration at U of T and retired from NB Public Health in 1977.
Phyllis continued to live in her Fredericton home until 2013 when, at the age of 96, she elected to move to Fredericton's Veteran's Health Unit. Phyl loved living in the VHU and remained joyful and humorous right up to her passing on January 26, 2016.
Phyl is survived by her nephews, Herbert "Bert" R‎oberts (Lois) and Arthur "Art" Roberts (Moyna Gick) and their families and her great niece and family, Lesley Smith (Brad) and their children Kalena‎ and Kennan. She is also survived by her many friends and relatives across Canada and around the world.
Phyl will remain dearly loved and respected by all.
She is predeceased by her sisters, Beatrice Roberts and Doris Lachance.
There will be no visition by request. A memorial service will be held in the spring at Wilmot United Church.
