Leon Charlebois

Passed on: January 25th, 2016

Leon Paul Charlebois passed away on January 25, 2016 at the Foyer St. Joseph Nursing Home in Ponteix, SK at the age of 89 years. Leon is survived by his spouse Josephine; his children Juliette (Alan Dunnett) and Maurice Charlebois; brothers Robert (Ann) and Lawrence (Doreen). He is predeceased by his parents Ludovic and Marie Rose, and his brother Raymond. Leon grew up on a farm in Marcelin, SK. After he graduated from high school, his employment history unfolded as follows: a teacher in a one room school house, attendant at two hospitals for the mentally ill, coalminer, pool elevator agent, and Credit Union manager. Leon married Josephine Goueffic on October 5, 1950 and they had two children, Juliette and Maurice. He moved his family to Ponteix in 1967 where he worked as the manager of the Credit Union until his retirement in 1989. Leon loved fishing, playing cards with friends, puttering with his tools in the shed, doing a variety of crafts and handwork, and watching reruns of the Bugs Bunny Roadrunner Show and the Three Stooges. At one point Leon and a good friend decided to build an ultra-lite airplane, which was ill-fated despite Leon's unbridled enthusiasm and blind determination to fly a plane. Leon never aspired to be a world traveler, but he and Josephine thoroughly enjoyed the numerous R.V. vacations they took with other couples who were close friends.
Leon routinely schemed to play practical jokes on people and was well known for telling jokes that were off color or politically incorrect. He was an independent thinker and always "did his own thing". He generally preferred to mind his own business but would certainly help when asked. Leon did not wear his emotions on his sleeve nor was he a "hands on dad" but there was never any doubt that he loved his family. Leon was bewildered by the concepts of eating healthy and exercise for the sake of exercise. This, combined with extreme stress at work, contributed to significant health issues in his late 60's. A series of strokes left Leon with many challenges so the last twenty years of his life were not exactly golden. Josephine was extremely devoted and supportive during those years and the care he received at the Foyer St. Joseph was exceptional. Leon's faith in God remained very strong throughout those difficult years and he is finally resting in peace. The Funeral Service will be held at the Notre Dame d' Auvergne Roman Catholic Church in Ponteix on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with Father Guy Amedee Aniemon officiating. The organist will be Daniel Roberge, and honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Chabot and John Mondor. The interment service will be held at the Ponteix Parish Cemetery. Donations in Leon's memory may be made to the Foyer St. Joseph Nursing Home Box 450 Ponteix, SK SON 1Z0.Warren's Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
