Andrew Augustine Shaw

Andrew Augustine Shaw

Born: September 16th, 1928

Passed on: January 17th, 2016

Andy died in Vancouver from complications arising from Alzheimer's disease, from which he had been suffering for several years. He had a fulfilling life and has now rejoined his dearest friend and adored wife Florence Shaw, who died in 2009. He is survived by his sons Tony (Angie), Greg, John (Tema), and Andy (Marion), his grandchildren Holly, Joëlle, Diana, Jean-Luc, Ben, Meredith, and Oriana, and many other cherished relatives and friends. Born in St. John's, Andy was a proud Newfoundlander. Over the course of a career of nearly forty years in the shipping industry, he held senior executive roles with ship owners, operations management and port development across Canada - St. John's, Montreal, Vancouver and Nanaimo. He was recognized for his determination and integrity. A child of the Depression, he worked hard to give his children opportunities that he never had. Family was always his focus: his enthusiasm for his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews was endearing and enduring; his love for Flos was spectacular. He was a lovely man - warm-hearted, charming and full of fun - and they were a fabulous couple. Their sixty-year love affair was an inspiration. We thank the staff of Sunrise of Vancouver for the tender care they have provided Andy since Flos died. We also wish to recognize the thoughtful support provided by his doctor, Stanley Sunshine, especially in Andy's final days. We particularly wish to thank Eileen Collins, Andy's beloved sister-in-law, for her unstinting love and support throughout his long illness. A celebration of his life will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 2465 Crown Street, Vancouver, BC, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2016. A burial service in St. John's will be arranged at a later date. In his memory, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer Society of BC (300 - 828 West 8th Avenue, Vancouver, B.C., V5Z 1E2 or on-line at www.alzheimer.ca/bc).
