Joseph Atwell

ATWELL, JOSEPH DOUGLAS
With heavy hearts, the family of Joseph Atwell announces his passing, which occurred on January 31st, 2016 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, surrounded by his family. Joseph was born in Falmouth, Nova Scotia on November 16, 1925 to Brent and Alice (Britton) Atwell.
He proudly served his country working the tug boats during World War II in the Merchant Marine, and in later years worked for Irving and K.C Wilson until his retirement as an engineer on the Ocean Hawk 2.
In his retirement, he enjoyed buying, selling, and fixing appliances; this was largely due to the fact that he would visit his son Norman at his shop, A&A Appliances every day. An avid handyman, Joseph was always busy; he simply never stopped. He was a dedicated father, grandfather, and great-grandfather; always involved in whatever his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were doing. He loved taking them to McDonalds, going fishing or telling stories, always so easy going. In his stories it was clear he had a love for St. Martins. Also, Joseph was affectionately referred to as a walking history book, and in his later years became a devoted animal lover.
Left to mourn are his sons Joseph (Susan) and Stanley (Barbara), daughters Ruth (Donald), Linda (Darrell) and Kathy (Gordon); a sister, Phyllis Gourlay, 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Joseph was predeceased by brothers Brent and Lesley, sister Christine, his son Norman, and the mother of his children, Frances.
Resting at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (646-2424), with visitation on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m and 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 3rd at 2:00 p.m., from the Fundy Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will take place in Mosher Hill Cemetery in the spring.
For those who wish, remembrances to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
