Sr. Marie Genevieve Deverou, NDS

Sr. Marie Genevieve, religious of Our Lady of Sion, died peacefully and was called home on February 21, 2016 at Rehoboth Care Home. Sr. Marie was born August 31, 1926 on the family farm near Broderick, Saskatchewan. Her early education was at Geneva, a one room country school. She attended St. Joseph’s School for grade eight and Nutana Collegiate for high school, both in Saskatoon. Sr. Marie received her B.Ed. in 1956 and her B.A. in 1963, both from the University of Saskatchewan. In August 1953 she entered the Congregation of Sion and made her first vows on September 15, 1955. She taught school for thirty-one years including many years in the Catholic System at the Convent of Sion and Sion Academy both in Moose Jaw and Saskatoon. Also, she taught at E.D. Feehan and Holy Cross High Schools in Saskatoon. Sr. Marie was a faithful, loyal and loving servant of God, always giving generously of her time. She cared for her mother while her mother was dying of cancer and she also cared for her elderly father for many years. Sr. Marie was known for her artistic abilities and her creativity. She painted beautiful pictures, wrote poetry and she loved to put on musicals and plays with her students. She loved teaching and she loved children. Sr. Marie celebrated 60 years of religious life in July 2015. Sr. Marie leaves to mourn her sisters, Dorothy Hagarty, Calgary, Louise Arnett, Edmonton, Jean Hughes, Eston, brother-in-law Don Kent, Regina, Sisters of the Congregation of Sion, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Roy Edward Deverou and Catherine Victoria (Knapik) Deverou and her sister Alvina Kent. The family and the Sisters of Sion would like to thank Sr. Marie’s care givers at Rehoboth Care Home and Columbian Manor, with special thanks to Sr. Marie’s friend Matoula. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, February 27, 2016 at St. Augustine Parish (602 Boychuck Dr., Saskatoon). Rite of Committal will be at a later date at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Broderick, Saskatchewan.
