At the age of 98, it is with gratitude for her life and sadness for the loss , we announce the passing of our wonderful mother, grandmother ,great-grandmother and friend Margaret McDonald on February 25, 2016 at Ivany Place, Bedford. Margaret was born on Feb. 9, 1918 to Ambrose White and Maryann Murphy.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Angus (Gussie) and daugher, Sharon Murphy; sister, Essie MacDonald; brothers, Otto and Joe White.
Margaret graduated from the Halifax Infirmary in 1939 and worked in the Merchant Marine there for a time. After her marriage to Gussie, they lived in New Waterford, where she was a member of the nursing and teaching staff of the New Waterford General Hospital. She belonged to the Cape Breton Artist Association and loved to paint in oils, watercolors and acrylic, as well as doing paper tole. She was an avid bridge player and played up to a few years ago and loved a good game of Auction. She was a member of the CWL of Mount Carmel Parish and loved to attend the Aging Gracefully group. Margaret and Gus enjoyed exploring Nova Scotia in their van as well as spending summers in their beloved North Side East Bay.
She is survived by her two daughters, Marilyn Kliza (Michael) and Marybeth Parris (Harry); grandchildren, Karen, Sean, Deborah, Geoff, Robert, Angie and Cora. She was very proud of her great-grandchildren, Jocelynne, Samantha, Sebastian, Claudia, Elena, Noah, Anthony, Autumn and Caitlin.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Spencer and sister-in-law, Kaye Taylor, as well as many neices and nephews and special friends, Willena and Lorne MacDonald, Donna and Bernie VanDoninck and Sue Dixon.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Mar. 1, 2016 from 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Wednesday, Mar. 2 at 1 p.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Cremation will follow with burial in Mount Carmel Cemetery at a later date. A luncheon will be held at St. Leonard's Parish Hall, Convent Street, immediately following the funeral mass.
