William Roy Murphy passed away peacefully at Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home in Glace Bay on Feb. 26, 2016.
He was born in Port Morien, Cape Breton County on March 31, 1922 and was the son of William Alexander Murphy and Catherine Morrison. His greatest loves were his best friend Kathleen and his eight children. As his family grew, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren became the centre of his universe. He worked for 40 years for Devco in Glace Bay as an iron worker and a carpenter. He enjoyed travelling with his family especially to P.E.I., loved family gatherings the more in the house the merrier. He always had a carpentry project on the go or some other repair work for family members. William is a veteran of the Second World War, he was member of the Calgary Highlanders and served in England, Holland, Germany and Belgium. Besides his love for his family, William was a great fiddler and was a member of the Billy Murphy Orchestra in his youth.
William is survived by his wife of 73 years, Kathleen Wadden; brother, Sonny; children, Marguerite (Willie), Vivian (Bob), Tricia (Rick), Karen, Florence (Ron), Bill (Audrey), Joyce (Charles), Kevin (Genevieve). His pride and joy were his grandchildren, Craig, Chris, Cathy, Sheryl, Annette, Ryan, Lynne, Laura, Charles, Liam, Jordan, Justin, Caitlin and his great-grandchildren, Emilie, Addison, Sophie, Liam, Paige, Claire and the newest addition Liam.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his infant daughter, Annette; son-in-law, Danny Maddox; brothers, James, Courtney, Byron, Donnie, Robert and sisters, Lima, Alice, Iris and Jean.
Visitation will be on Monday, Feb. 29, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 1st, at St Mary’s Church, Port Morien. The Rev. Norman MacPhee will be officiating. The interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
The family would like to thank Dr. MacLean for his professionalism and care of dad the past four years. We are so grateful to the staff of the veteran’s wing at Taigh Na Mara for their love and attention.
