CUNNINGHAM, RONALD
Ronald Joseph Everett Cunningham, age 89, Dartmouth, died peacefully on February 27, 2016 at the QE II Health Sciences Centre after suffering a stroke earlier that day. Born April 30, 1926 in Moncton, NB to the late Ronald Edmund and Beatrice Evelyn (Roy/King) Cunningham, he attended Moncton High School.
In 1954, he married Margaret Carroll in St. Samuel's Church in Douglastown, NB.
Along with Marg, he is survived by their five daughters, Cathy Connors (Michael Abraham), JoAnn Cunningham (Gordon Page), Mary Barron all of Dartmouth, Carol Cunningham (Joe McGrath) of Halifax, and Clare O'Brien (Shawn) of Mineville. He was the proud grandfather to his nine grandchildren, Paul Connors, Lauren Alexander (Benedict), Patrick Connors, Nicholas, Dennis, Sarah and Mitchell Barron, and Emma and Jack O'Brien. Grampie took great delight in all the activities of his grandchildren and was an avid supporter of all their sporting and musical events. Ron and Marg were inseparable over their 61 years of marriage and supported us all.
Ron is also survived by his brother Alan (Pat) Cunningham, Moncton, many cherished nieces and nephews, several cousins, seven godchildren, in-laws Alberta (Dwight) Creamer and Allan (Judy) Carroll. He has enjoyed the love and respect of many long-time friends and neighbours in Moncton, Saint John, and Dartmouth. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Ron attended St. Francis Xavier University for two years during the war where he made many lifelong friends. While at St. FX he served in the Officer Training Corps completing his training with the Naval Reserve onboard HMCS Middlesex. Ron worked as a commercial traveller and manufacturer's representative in Moncton, Saint John and Halifax, travelling the Maritimes for almost 50 years. While living in Saint John, he was a member of the Carleton Curling Club.
Ron had a lifelong love of flying and all things aviation related. He was an air cadet and then took flying lessons at the Moncton Flying Club and soloed on February 21 1948. At the age of 72, Ron re-qualified flying a Cessna solo exactly 50 years after his first solo flight. He was a founding member of the Halifax Aviation Museum, maintaining and refurbishing displays, regaling visitors and friends with aviation stories, and serving on the executive, including a term as President.
A devout Catholic, he was a lay reader for many years and also served on the church property committee.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Joan (Blair) Skidd, parents-in-law Albert and Agnes (Innes) Carroll, and son-in-law Jim Connors.
The family thanks his family doctor, Dr. Rod Lee, and the excellent ER and nursing staff at the QEII Health Sciences Centre.
Visitation will be at St. Peter's Parish Centre, 3 Crichton Avenue, Dartmouth on Wednesday, March 2 2016, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The funeral will take place at St. Peter's Church, 10 Maple Street, Dartmouth on Thursday, March 3 2016 at 12:00 pm, Fr. Jim Richards officiating. Reception to follow in the Parish Centre.
