Edith 'Edie' Dorothy Martin

Edith 'Edie' Dorothy Martin

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our mother, Edith 'Edie' Dorothy (Smith) Martin on Wednesday, February 24, 2016. Mom was the heart and soul of our family. Born on November 24, 1930, she was the second oldest of Charles and Thelma (Wiseman) Smith's fourteen children. While growing up in the depression years was not easy, Mom often shared wonderful memories of her childhood on Herrett Road - family picnics, skating parties and the sugar woods, especially with her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Mom married Dad (Russell William Martin) on August 4, 1952 (1922- 1991) and were blessed with nine children; Jean (Rod Crowe) Martin, Springhill, Dan (Debbie) Martin, Springhill, Bonnie Givens Martin, Quesnel, BC, Gale (Cleve) Canning, New Glasgow, Bill (Jo-Ann) Martin, Greenhill, Shelley (Ron Mitchell) Martin, Calgary, Donna (Mark Dickson) Martin, Springhill, Judy MacEwan, Quesnel, BC, and Lisa (Bruce) Sangster, Amherst. Needless to say, Mom's life was focused on raising her children. She was not one to shy away from hard work. Mom was employed at Buckingham Mills and later at All Saints Hospital in various departments, until her retirement in 1991.
Mom was a member of the Springhill Seniors', Traveler's singing group, St. David's Presbyterian Church, and St. Andrew's Wesley United Church. She enjoyed knitting, quilting, gardening, playing cards, baking/cooking for everyone and especially her lexicon puzzle books. She also enjoyed spending time with her family at Heather's Beach, Poison Lake and going to her nephew, Donnie's camp at the Branch. Mom was constantly on the go, senior years or health issues did not slow her down. If there was musical event, fundraiser, or birthday party she was there.
Mom's life was further blessed with the arrival of 17 grandchildren – Angela (Aaron) Bourgeois, Andrew (Stephanie) Melanson, Charlie (Anna) Martin, Matthew (Lindsay) Martin, Josh (Andrea) Martin, Shallyn (Jordan) Cook, Crystal (Curran) Parks, Stuart (Katrina) Canning, Allison (Daniel) Canning, David (Amber) Martin, Christopher (Sarah) Martin, Amy Martin, Monique Martin-Parent, Jason (Schyler) MacEwan, Robin MacEwan, Tyler Sangster and Lucas Sangster as well as 15 great-grandchildren.
She was very proud of her children and grandchildren's accomplishment. She loved to show off her photos, and to attend all of their functions. She particular enjoyed Facebook, catching all the Smith Homestead entries and encouraged the grandchildren to post photos of the great grandchildren who she adored so much.
In addition, to her children she is survived by a sister, Audrey (Warren) Spence, Amherst; brothers, Norman 'Tommy' (Linda) Smith and Larry (Marie) Smith, both of Quesnel, BC.; Gary (Loretta) Smith; Harold 'Hallie' Smith and Burton Smith, all of Springhill.
Besides her parents, mom was predeceased by brothers, Clyde Smith; George Smith, Cleve Smith, Ronald Smith & Robert Smith; sisters Gladys (Smith) Herrett and Carol (Smith) Herrett.
Arrangements are under the care and guidance of A.H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill; (902-597-2361) from where a time of visitation was held 2-4 & 6-8 pm on Saturday, February 27, 2016. A funeral service took place on Sunday, February 28, at 3 pm at the St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church, Springhill, with The Reverend Wayne McCarther officiating. Interment will take place in the Hillside Cemetery in the Spring.
Donations in memory of Edie may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada or a charity of one's choice.
Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting Edie's online memorial at www.brownsfuneralhome.com or though the funeral home Facebook Page.
