Sister Carmelita (Michael Marie) Currie, 84, died in Caritas Residence, Halifax, N.S. on March 8, 2016.
Born in Reserve, N.S. on March 21, 1931, she was a daughter of Michael and Mary (Finnell) Currie. Sister Carmelita entered the Sisters of Charity - Halifax, on Sept. 8, 1949 and made her final vows on August 15, 1958. She received a BSEd and a BA from Mount Saint Vincent University. She began her ministry as an educator when she spent a few months teaching in Havre Boucher, N.S., in 1952. She then was missioned to Brooklyn, N.Y., where she taught for four years. At the end of that time, she returned to Havre Boucher in 1956 and remained there until 1957, followed by two years of teaching in Lourdes, N.S. From 1959 to 1966 she taught in Oxford School, Halifax. Sister Carmelita then moved to Dorval, Que., where she taught elementary school until 1974. In that year, she began teaching high school in Dorval and began her work in caring for foster boys, a work she continued until 1991. She also volunteered as a driver for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Later, she moved to Sillery, Que., where she volunteered in St. Brigid’s Home for several years. In 1998, she returned to Halifax and resided in Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse, where she coordinated the transportation needs of the retired sisters, a work she continued until 2015 when her health deteriorated to the point where she could no longer sustain her schedule.
Sister Carmelita is survived by her sister, Ursula (Michael) Macdonald, Reserve Mines; sisters-in-law, Anna, New Waterford and Cecilia, Reserve Mines and by many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Theresa Amadio and Angie Campbell; by her brothers, Rev. Reginald Currie, Michael, Basil and John (Jake).
The body will be in Caritas Residence on Thursday, March 10, with visitation from 3 p.m. until the Prayer Service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 11, at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, N.S.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
