My father, John Hatfield passed away on March 12, 2015 at 63 years of age, a week after being diagnosed with lung cancer. He was better known as “porky” to his close friends from Sparwood BC where he lived for several years as he worked for the local mining company.

The past 20 years he had lived in Swift Current SK with his wife of 43 years, Debra Hatfield. My father was fortunate to be able to fish, play darts and cards regularly with his best friend of over 40 years, Frank Hopkin (AKA Hoppy).

When visiting his siblings in Marcelin SK he could always be found at a card table with a crown and pepsi (NOT coke) and no ice.

Dad, you were a kind and generous soul, you made sacrifices to make your daughters and wife happy and provide the best you could. We were shaken by the news and the short time we had left to say all we needed to say, however when I look back over the past few years I realized you were fighting to stay alive. You may not have known you had cancer but you were aware you were ill and yet you still stayed positive about life whenever we spoke with you. You fought long enough to walk your youngest daughter, Bev Daton down the aisle, hear the sex of the new baby (Grayson John Dalton) Bev was to have on Apr 21, 2015.

The final days right up to your final breath you were surrounded by love. All nine of your siblings, Lee, Chris, Kathy, Tim, Lynn, Tom, Ruth, Sandy and Bobby along with all of their children stayed day and night by your side to support you as you supported all of them over the years.

Now your spirit rests with your father and mother, John and Grace Hatfield where we all know you will be playing cards or an old Grampa Jack favorite, backgammon .
