Zildjan, F. Michael
Michael Zildjan of Fredericton, NB passed away unexpectedly on March 10th, 2016 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. He was born in Istanbul, Turkey on July 21st, 1949 and was the son of the late Kerope and Eli (Matiaoutu) Zilcan and husband to Jennifer (Pawsey) Zildjan.
Michael is survived by his wife, Jennifer; his sons, Nicholas “Nick” Zildjan (Marcie Scott) of Fredericton and Zachary Michael Zildjan of Fredericton; his granddaughter, (who knew him as her “Dido”) Mila Isobel Zildjan “MIZ”; brother, Gabriel “Gabe” Zilcan (Santi) of Meductic, NB; one sister-in-law, Gaynelle Jeffries; three nephews, Robbie and Roy Zilcan and Geoffrey Pawsey; one special niece, Paige Humber (Matt) and their son, Jonathan.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother-in-law, John Pawsey.
Mike moved to North America in his early 20s from his uncle’s cymbal factory in Istanbul and continued as a hand-hammered artisan in Meductic until 1979. Commonly known as “Turk” at the time, he met the woman he would spend the next 40 years with, Jennifer in 1972. Mike spent 25 years serving Canada with the RCMP as both a civilian officer and as a uniformed member. He completed his training at the RCMP Academy Depot Division in 1989 at the age of 40 and served in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, retiring in 2009 as a corporal.
Since retirement, Mike reconnected with his family’s roots and assisted an old friend by being heavily involved in Istanbul Mehmet Cymbals. He worked hard at distributing the cymbals here in Canada up until his death.
Mike loved life to the fullest. He was well known for his involvement in sports, specifically basketball and soccer, his favorite team being the Toronto Raptors. He loved to travel, movies, ethnic cooking and facebook. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He will be missed by many. He was small in stature with a huge heart.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Michael’s life at McAdam’s Funeral Home, Fredericton, NB on Tuesday, March 15th between 2-6 pm with words of remembrance at 4:00 pm.
