BARRIEAU, JOSEPH "GEORGE" PETER
1941-2016
Joseph "George" Peter Barrieau of 6 Barrieau Street, Miramichi (Douglasfield), passed away peacefully at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on March 1st, 2016 at the age of 74, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Born in Newcastle, N.B. on June 23rd, 1941, George was the eldest son of the late Peter and Gladys (Donovan) Barrieau of Douglasfield.
He worked as a barber in Newcastle for 50 years, having owned and operated his own business, George's Barber Shop, from 1979 until his retirement in 2011, and was a member of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, Nelson-Miramichi.
George will be sadly missed by his wife, Marion (Geldart) Barrieau, formerly of Lewis Mountain; four daughters: Mary Ann of Douglasfield, Ellen (Blake) Waye of Trout Brook, Patricia "Patti" (Glenn) Breaker of Maces Bay, Margaret "Peggy" of Chatham; granddaughter Lindsay Waye of Fredericton; grandsons Ryan and Benjamin Waye of Trout Brook; four brothers: Ronnie, Pete (Barb Walsh), Gerry (Barb Lynch), Edward (Helen Corcoran), all of Douglasfield; four sisters: Anne (Pat) Butler, Nancy (Ken) McIntosh, Cathy (Paul) Hamilton, all of Douglasfield, and Pam (Tony) Layton of South Nelson; brother-in-law Edmund "Stoney" Malley of Douglasfield; as well as several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and extended family members.
Besides his parents, George was predeceased by infant son Paul Joseph; sister Janice Malley; infant brother Robert; and sister-in-law Julianna (Richard) Barrieau.
Visitation was held at Northumberland Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 2nd from 7 to 9 p.m., and on Thursday, March 3rd from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated from St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church on Friday, March 4th at 11 a.m., with Father Arnie Hachey officiating. Music was provided by guitarist and soloist Paula Foley. Readings were done by eldest daughter, Mary Ann (1st reading) and by two of George's godchildren, Andy Barrieau (2nd reading) and Karen Geldart (Prayers of the Faithful). Active Pallbearers were George's brothers, Ron, Pete, Gerry, and Ed Barrieau, and his grandsons, Ryan and Ben Waye. Honorary Pallbearers were George's longtime friends, Lloyd Stewart and David Irving; friends and former co-workers, Roy Brophy and Nick McKinnon; friend and brother-in-law, Alden Geldart; and friends and cousins, Greg Donovan, Bernie Donovan, and Mike Donovan. Burial will take place in St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Cemetery later in the spring.
In George's memory, donations to either the Oncology Clinic or the Palliative Care Unit at the Miramichi Regional Hospital would be appreciated by the family.
