Stephen Dale Allen – 82, of Melanson, Kings County, passed away peacefully, March 12, 2016 at the QEII Hospital, Halifax with family by his side. Born on July 8, 1933 in Wolfville, he was the son of the late Clayton and Evelyn (Cavanagh) Allen. He was a plumber by trade, quick to lend a hand when someone was in need. Steve’s love for sports and active involvement both as a player and 50-plus years as a coach in hockey, softball and tug-of-war not only played an important role in the lives of the generations of his family, but he touched the lives of countless others throughout his life. He also loved being outdoors, whether it was tending to the orchard, looking after the lawn and gardens, working in the woods, snow removal or playing with the children, he was always active. Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Maxine (Smith); sons, Gary (Nancy), Greg (Marlene), David (Denise) and Duane; special niece, Danette; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; mother-in-law, Margaret Smith; brothers, Leslie, Alton, Budd and Paul; sisters, Barbara, Rosalind (Gil), Beverley and Audrey (Tony); several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by son, Dale; daughter, Margaret (in infancy); grandson, Jason; brothers, Joe, Glenn, Chesley and Charlie; sisters, Dorothy Corkum and Ena Rogers; father-in-law, William Smith. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 17, 2016 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 18, 2016, Reverend Gary Manthorne officiating. Burial took place in the Melanson Mountain Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to the Wallbrook Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.
