Passed in: Glace Bay
Passed on: March 17th, 2016

It is with broken hearts that we, the family of Bernie, formerly of No. 11, announce his peaceful passing.
Bernie passed away surrounded by his loving family at the Glace Bay Hospital after a courageous battle with COPD and lung cancer on Friday, March 17, 2016 at the age of 64.
He fought to stay with us until the bitter end.
Born in Glace Bay, on May 27, 1951, he was the youngest son of the late Arthur and Elizabeth (Poirier) Sharpe.
Bernie was a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces and a coal miner in #26, Prince and Phalen colleries. He lost his dad and brother, Clifford, as a result of mining tragedies. In his younger and healthier years he was an avid dart and softball player, enjoyed bowling and golfing. He was a proud member of AA for over 30 years. Bernie could make friends easily and could talk to anyone and make them smile.
Bernie will be sadly missed by his wife, the love of his life of 42 years, Helen (Melnick); his three children, Wayne (Theresa), Edmonton, Tammy, Bernadette (Freddy Talbot), Glace Bay; Poppy's precious grandchildren, whom he idolized, Tasha, Nicholas, Ethan, Kaitlyn and Mylee; his siblings, Jerry (Pat) Port Hawkesbury, Donna (Ken Cooke), Bedford, Frances Miller, Ottawa, Ray, Reserve Mines and David (Glenda), Glace Bay. Also, a very special niece, Laura Lee Sharpe; in-laws, Ester, Annie, Mary Agnes, Stella, Frankie, Norman, Billy and many loving nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was deceased by brothers, Wayne, Clifford and his oldest sister, Beatty McSween.
A very special thank you to Dr. Gordon Spencer, Respiratory Therapy, Palliative Care, Glace Bay Hospital, 3rd Floor and other hospital staff that were involved in Bernie's care.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation for Bernie will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at Curry's Glace Bay Funeral Home, 775 Main St. A celebration of life service will be held 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, 2016 in the funeral home chapel with Fr. Patrick O'Neill officiating. Interment will be held at St. Anthony's Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations on Bernie's memory may be made to Palliative Care or a charity of your choice.
