Eugene Roland Whidden

Whidden, Eugene Roland, age 77 of Bible Hill passed away unexpectedly on March 26, 2016. Born in North River on July 10, 1938, he was the son of the late William Roland Whidden and the late Alice Blanche MacDonald. In his younger years, he was an accomplished multi-sport athlete, enjoying a variety of sports such as: swimming, bowling, darts & fastball; and was inducted into the Truro Sports Hall of Fame in 1998 as a member of the 1964 North River Aces. He was a truck driver all his life, working many years for Eastern Transport, Richie Barnhill Enterprises and Terry Weatherbee. In his retirement years, he enjoyed his many trips to and from the airport delivering drivers for MacKays Truck Centre. He enjoyed taking meticulous care of his many vehicles over the years. He enjoyed coffee and conversation with his many friends at the Truro Mall and at “Hortons”. He was a loving and dedicated father, grandfather and great-grandfather and took particular joy in spending time with his young great-grandchildren. He is survived by his children, Susan (George) Dickie, Old Barns; Dale (Shelley) Whidden, Old Barns; and Sonya (Tom) Shanahan, Bowmanville, Ont. His grandchildren, Melissa (Adam) Harrison, Lucas (Lisa Hames) Dickie, Erica (Mitchell King) Lane, Richard (Stephanie Amodeo) Shanahan, Elizabeth Shanahan, and Matthew (Morgan James) Shanahan. His great-grandchildren, Aleah, Adam, Charley, Haley, Mckenna, Marcus, and Evelyn. His sister Cindy (Barry) Langille, Riverview, NB. Nephews, Chris (Nadia) Langille, and Ryan (Melissa King) Langille. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Wade, his sister Maxine, his nephews David and Bradley and his step-father Fred. As per Eugene’s wishes, there will be no funeral service or visitation. A celebration of life will be held at the Cobequid Fire Hall in Old Barns on Saturday, April 23rd from 2:00 to 4:00 pm with private family burial to follow at the Old Barns Cemetery. If so desired, donations in Eugene’s memory to the IWK are welcomed. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.
