Lawrence McGrath

McGrath, Lawrence Albert
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Larry McGrath announces his unexpected passing, which occurred on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at his residence. Born in Saint John on September 17, 1934, he was the only child of the late William J. B. and M. Eileen (Palmer) McGrath.
Larry’s love of life was evident to all who knew him. He enjoyed spending time on the St. John River on his boats, in particular “My Sunshine”. Many people appreciated his hospitality on the water. His interests were varied, which included officiating as a softball umpire for various leagues. Most Thursday evenings would find him in Lorneville playing music. For many years he provided entertainment at the Senior Centre in the City Market where he served on the Board of Directors. He had a successful snow clearing business with his business partner and friend, Peter Cobhan. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.
Larry taught for 35 years at St. Malachy’s Memorial, Simonds and eventually at St. Vincent’s High School. He was a past president of the local New Brunswick Teachers’ Federation and continued working with the teacher’s federation in various capacities, as well as the Retired Teachers’ Association.
He will be missed by his children, David L. McGrath (Aliza) and Ann E. (McGrath) Boyle (Wayne); his grandsons, Donny and Adam Kerr; the mother of his children, Elizabeth James; his beloved canine companion, McDuff; as well as many cousins, friends and bandmates.
