It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of William Johnston Russell, age 87, loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle, on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in North Sydney on March 27, 1929, he was the son of the late John 'Jack' and Loretta (Boutilier) Russell.
William was a veteran of the Korean War serving overseas with the Canadian Army. He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish for many years and also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #19 in North Sydney. A very humble man, he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, playing cards with his brothers and spending time at home with his family. He could also be seen walking through town toward the mall scratching his lottery tickets.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He is survived by his loving wife Mildred who resides at the Northside Community Guest Home, his two daughters Shirley (Kevin) MacDonald and Leona Russell, both of North Sydney, his three grandchildren Nolan, Darcy and Sarah and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his three brothers John, Edward and Ernest 'Butch' Russell and his two sisters Mary Gale and Carmelita Hastie.
There will be no visitation or funeral service by request. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
