Passed in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: April 2nd, 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Loretta on April 2, 2016, at Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax.
Loretta was born in North Sydney, N.S., on July 21, 1933, to the late Mary (Gillis) and Murdock MacKinnon, Sydney Mines. After attending high school in Mabou, she spent most of her life in Saint John, N.B., as a Sister of Charity of the Immaculate Conception (SCIC). It was in Saint John that she began her teaching career, and she retired as principal of St. Vincent’s High School. She was held in high esteem by both her students and staff.
Loretta was multitalented in many areas, but loved music above all. She not only sang, but also played both piano and organ. Loretta possessed a wonderful zest for life, and was always ready for a challenge to learn and absorb new ideas.
Loretta is survived by her sisters, Anne MacKinnon and Miriam Deveaux (Terry); as well as brothers, Francis 'Farmer' (Mary Steele) and Paul 'Moose' (Denise McDonnell). She is also survived by her nieces, Jenn MacKinnon-Cooper (Shawn), and Rosalie Horsford (Andrew); as well as nephews, Stephen Deveaux (Robyn), Corey Deveaux (Stephanie Myles) and Russell MacKinnon.
She will be greatly missed by her cherished and closest friend, Marilyn Olding, and her wonderful family, who were all so kind to her.
Special thanks to the wonderful caregivers of Citadel Court, Parkstone Enhanced Care. They gave great care to Loretta. She also received loving care from the staff of Evan Hall.
Cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney, on Thursday, April 7, 2016, at 10 a.m. with Fr. Patrick O’Neill officiating. A reception will follow. Burial to take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines, at a later date.
Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, or a charity of your choice.
