Velma Kelly

KELLY, VELMA MAUDE
Velma Kelly, formerly of Fredericton, NB passed away peacefully at Rocmaura Nursing Home, Saint John, NB on Sunday, April 3rd, 2016. Born in Stanley, NB on November 23rd, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Dorothy (Scott) Harrison and was the wife of the late Harold Kelly.
Velma loved life, had a huge heart and was a social butterfly. She made friends easily and enjoyed entertaining. She was an avid lover of animals and over the years many four legged friends found a home with her. She did plenty of volunteering with the Fredericton Museum and was always dedicated to the Anglican Church she attended and was a member of the ACW. Many organizations were happy to have her as a member including: the Stanley Women’s Institute, the Stanley Agricultural Society, the Stanley Golden Age Club, the Fredericton Historical Society and the Fredericton Museum. She was even known to judge at the Stanley Fairs and the Fredericton Exhibition. Writing came naturally to her and she was a published author, giving life to New Brunswick history and folklore and even dabbling in children’s books. Many people enjoyed her quilting skills and her collection of over 200 dolls astounded many. Velma took pleasure in many things but she especially loved music. Playing the guitar and attending the Miramichi Folksong Festival was her passion.
She will be missed by her sister-in-law, Noreen Harrison of Lincoln, NB; nieces and nephew, Debbie Blauvelt (Frank), Donnie Harrison (Lisa), Darlene Stanley (Steven), Donna Shelley (David) and Kelly Norrad (Bing) as well as several great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her husband, Harold; parents, Harold and Dorothy and her brother, Earle.
Words cannot describe how grateful Velma’s family is for the phenomenal staff at the Rocmaura Nursing Home. Each individual staff went above and beyond their job description. The Senior Watch Group will also be remembered and appreciated for their wonderful compassion over the past few months.
There will be no visitation at Velma’s request. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 7th, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 780 McEvoy Street, Fredericton. The Rev. Canon Kevin Stockall will officiate. Interment will take place at a later date in the St. Thomas Anglican Cemetery in Stanley.
In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in Velma’s honour may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to McAdam’s Funeral Home and online remembrances may be left at www.mcadamsfh.com.
