It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mom, kiju and sister, Susie Bernard (Simon), age 72, on Sunday, April 3, 2016 at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Baddeck, she was the daughter of the late Andrew & Mary Ellen Simon (Pierro). She was a member of Blessed Kateri Tekekwitha parish, Wagmatcook.
She is survived by her son, Robert Simon, Wagmatcook; four daughters, Jessie Christmas, Membertou, Mary Simon, Sydney, Patricia (Alfred) Simon, Wagmatcook and Jackie (Phil) Drinnan, Little Narrows; 32 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and three godchildren, Lora, Maxine and Christina. She is also survived by sisters, Katherine Isadore (Walter) and Jane Julia Simon (Allister), both of Wagmatcook and brother, Matthew Francis of Eskasoni.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, David Bernard; sons, John Andrew Simon, Rene Bernard and infant son, Joseph; sisters, Ida Bernard and Mary Belle Isadore; brothers, John Simon, Michael Pierro and Levi Mattie; grandson, Cyrus Peck; son-in-law, Roger Christmas; brothers-in-law, Lawrence Bernard and Peter Isadore and godchild, Simon Basque.
Mom’s favourite past time was to play TV Bingo, play cards, knitting socks, scarves and mittens that she donated to the Wagmatcook Elementary School. She also enjoyed her days with the company of her favourite cat “Midnight” for 14 yrs. Mom also thought the world of Chief Norman Bernard and Lester Peck.
The family would like to thank Dr. Genge, Dr. Chow and the staff at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital; nurses, Elaine Allison, Ann MacDonald, Wendy Wong and Shirley Fraser.
Visitation for our mom will be held at the Wagmatcook Elders Ctr., Fishery Road in Wagmatcook, starting April 7, 2016 at 4 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m., April 9, 2016 at the Blessed Kateri Tekekwitha Church with Rev. Paul Abbass officiating. Burial will be in the Queen of the World Cemetery following the service.
