Craig Carleton

CARLETON, CRAIG JOHN, BA, MA, LLB, QC
Craig J. Carleton, QC of Fredericton, NB passed away peacefully Monday, April 4, 2016 at the Oromocto Public Hospital. Born March 9, 1963 in Moncton, NB, he was the son of John D. Carleton and the late Nadine Joy (Cunningham).
He is survived by his beloved wife and family—the Honourable Justice Kathleen Quigg and their children, sons Liam and Seth and daughter Kate. Craig is also survived by his father John, brother Jeffrey (the Honourable Associate Chief Judge Mary Jane Richards) of Fredericton, NB, and sister Kimberly (Paul Smart) of Moncton, NB. He was predeceased by his mother Nadine and his sister Karolyn (Babin). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, as well as a wide circle of friends who became family.
A graduate of the University of New Brunswick (Bachelor of Arts–History), University of Western Ontario (Master of Arts–History) and the University of New Brunswick Law School, he earned numerous scholarships during his studies. He was a respected lawyer in Bathurst, NB for more than two decades, earning a Queen’s Counsel designation, and then Clerk of the Court in Fredericton and Woodstock for five years.
Craig lived a full, rich life and had many friends and acquaintances in his professional and personal life. He was a devoted husband and loving father who introduced his children to history, literature, music and New Brunswick popular culture, travelling with them far and wide to introduce them to new experiences. He coached his children in baseball, soccer and hockey and he also coached senior baseball in northern New Brunswick. Later in life, he began participating in new sports as he became an avid runner, taking part in six marathons and many half-marathons, and he became a long-distance cyclist.
His family would like to extend their appreciation to the doctors and staff of the Oromocto Public Hospital palliative care unit, as well as the Saint John Regional Hospital surgical intensive care and oncology units where Dr. George Kolyvas and Dr. Margot Burnell provided exceptional care. Dr. Tim Snell, a classmate from the UNB History Department, was caring and compassionate and provided valued support to Craig’s family. For over two years, his many nurses and care workers came to appreciate and cherish Craig as much as his family and friends did. For this his family will always be grateful.
Visiting hours will be at McAdams Funeral Home on Thursday, April 7, from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. A funeral service will be held at Brunswick Street Baptist Church on York Street in Fredericton on Friday, April 8, at 2 pm. A reception will follow the service.
