SMITH, RICHARD KEITH
1936 - 2016
The death of Richard Keith Smith, 79, of Port Elgin, occurred at the Sackville Memorial Hospital on Saturday, April 9, 2016. Born in Sackville, Keith was a son of the late John and Dorothy (Coombs) Smith.
To quote Keith, "When I had a life..." I graduated from Dorchester High School in 1954 followed by Teacher's College in Fredericton. My first job was in East Saint John where I met my future wife, Elaine. After spending 37 years in the field of education as a teacher and administrator, I decided to retire in 1992. While raising a family, I attended Mount Allison University and the University of New Brunswick. I was a member of several provincial and local commissions such as the South East Economic Commission and the Westmorland/Albert Solid Waste Commission. I served as mayor and councillor in the Village of Port Elgin. I was a member of several service clubs like Rotary and Kinsmen. I was Past Master of Westmorland Lodge #44, F.& A.M. and Past Patron of Fort Monckton Chapter #11 O.E.S. A few of my favourite things were to read, watch westerns, play cards and pass the time with my Labrador Retrievers.
As quoted by his family, "How lucky we are to have known someone who was so hard to say goodbye to."
He will be sadly missed by his wife Elaine, Port Elgin; daughters Beatrice (Steve) Daniel, Yellowknife, and Susan Muttenthaler, Dartmouth; four granddaughters Ilia and Arielle Daniel, Yellowknife and Joyce and Karla Muttenthaler, Dartmouth; sister Bessie Chapman, Riverview; brother Lyman (Joan) Smith, Bathurst; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his sister Beatrice Estabrooks and brothers Wallace and James.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Jones Funeral Home. An Evening of Remembrance will be held at the Jones Funeral Home's, Port Elgin Location, 3 West Main St., (506-538-2241) on Tuesday, April 12 from 6 to 9 pm with a Masonic Service at 6 pm and an Eastern Star service at 6:15 pm. Burial will take place in the Central Hampstead Rural Cemetery at a later date.
