Eldon Leroy Sawler – 87, of North Alton, Kings County, passed away Thursday, April 7, 2016 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on October 24, 1928 in North Alton, he was a son of the late Gladys (Welton) Shaffer and John Sawler. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed a good game of Scrabble. He loved to pick berries, make sauerkraut, read, go camping and attend Bluegrass festivals. He also loved spending time with family and friends. Eldon worked for many years with Alfred Welton (Welton Construction) and also with the Municipality of Kings as a heavy duty mechanic, from where he retired. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Corbett) Sawler; two sons, David, South Alton and Kenneth, South Alton; a daughter, Mary MacKinnon, Alberta; a sister-in-law, Hazel Shaffer, South Alton; three grandchildren, Verna, James and Jennifer; four great grandchildren, Harleigh, Aaron, Sarah and Alexander; six step-children, Barbara, Larry, Linda, Margaret, Karen and Janet; nine step-grandchildren; seven step-great grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his first wife, Verna; his step-father, Wilson Shaffer; six brothers, James, Bazil, Vern, Karl, Garth and Hubert Shaffer; a daughter-in-law, Verna. Cremation has taken place. There was no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2016 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Virginia DeAdder and Reverend Layton MacDonald officiating. A private family burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the North Alton Baptist Church. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
