Gilbert attended Valva School, which was located two and a half miles west of the farm. Gilbert and June were married on July 11, 1959 at Swift Current, Sask. from St. Olaf Lutheran Church. At the age of 16, Gilbert started working full time on the farm. He used real horse power and plows that periodically were lost in sand storms or buried under Russian thistles. He coped and prevailed and developed a deep love for farming that lasted all his life. He retired from farming at age 96 - 80 years on the job!!! His favorite sound was the purr of the tractor. He went from horse and plow, to tractor-guided GPS and satellites. After marrying June, he entered a new phase of his life. For the next 56 years he was a devoted family man to June, Karen, Neil and their children: root beer floats, decorating Christmas cookies, going to the fair, July 1 st BBQ'S, cheering on the Roughriders, curling and camping with the family were just a few of his favorite ways to spend time with them. Gilbert and June had many wonderful trips together over the years: including Hawaii, Mainland U.S.A., Europe and several places in Canada; always creating great memories along the way! He played the guitar and harmonica - even winning second place in a Provincial amateur competition. Gilbert was also a very good community member and his service to his community was great: he was on the ground floor of the establishment of the NDP with Tommy Douglas: fighting for human rights and universal healthcare; 35 years with the Eagles Lodge, 53 year member of the Wheat Pool, 10 years with the Kinetic Club, 35 year member of Kiwanis, 23 years with the Cantuar Community Club, and 26 years of service as a councilor for the RM of Swift Current. Gilbert had a great gift in the fact that he did not let his age define him. We are sure the weight of the years impacted him, but we don't remember Gilbert complaining. When interviewed, he was asked what his favorite age/era was. This was the only question he couldn't/wouldn't answer. He said, "he liked them all". He wasn't waiting to retire or longing for his glory days. He was enjoying everyday to the fullest and that is how he lived his life. His memory and his stories will be carried forward by us and our children. We will all smile when remembering him and we know, that we will be remembering him often. The internment service was held at Memory Gardens at Swift Current. In memory of Gilbert John Bulin donations made to The St. Olaf Lutheran Church Renovation Fund or to The Royal Canadian Legion Renovation Fund would be appreciated by the Family.
