Lloyd Abbott

ABBOTT, LLOYD ROBERT
The passing of Lloyd Robert Abbott of Burton, New Brunswick, occurred on Friday, April 15th, 2016, at the Oromocto Public Hospital. Lloyd was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, on May 18th, 1931, to Majors Robert George and Matilda Ann Abbott, Salvation Army Officers.
Lloyd worked for 18 years with the civil service, working in the financial branch of the postal department, and in 1967 he joined the Royal Canadian Regiment Band where he was the trombone soloist for 14 years. During his time with the RCR Band, Lloyd performed across Canada and Europe, including performances for the Pope and Queen Elizabeth. After retirement from the military, he drove school bus in the Burton/Oromocto area, for 11 years. Besides his varied career, Lloyd was also an expert carpenter and an Amateur Radio Operator.
Lloyd was a kind, caring and loving man who saw the best in people and loved sharing stories with anyone who would listen. As a bus driver, he greeted each child by name with a cherry ‘good morning!’ and, at the end of the school day, he always wished them a good night. Lloyd said that you never knew how each child’s morning began so he wanted to make sure that they got a smile and a personal greeting to get their school day off to a good start.
Lloyd was a family man who was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved going camping with the extended family, enjoying picnics, family trips to Old Orchard, and family dinners. His legacy lives on in his family, who share his love of family and every opportunity to spend quality time together.
Lloyd leaves behind his soul mate and wife of 66 years, Rita; three children – Marilyn Abbott-Charters (Steve), Robert Abbott (Regina), and Carla Abbott; five grandchildren – Pamela Fulton (Chris), Julia Lavery (Jim), Thomas Charters (Janelle), Nicole Emerson (Mark), and Calli Abbott; and seven great-grandchildren – Owen, Ayden, Jacob, Emma, Lily, Raymond and Benjamin.
He was predeceased by his mother and father, brother – Dr. Eric Abbott, two step brothers – Everett and George Abbott, and one step sister – Olive Denny.
Lloyd's family would like to thank the nursing staff at the Oromocto Public Hospital who took such loving care of him. Thank-you to Dr. Snell and a special thank-you to Dr. Brian Reid who shared many common interests with our father and gave him the best of care.
A funeral service will take place at the Oromocto United Church on Wednesday, April 20th, 2016, at 2:00 PM with Rev. Kelly Burke officiating. A private interment will take place in the Oromocto Pioneer Gardens Cemetery.
For those who wish, donations made in Lloyd’s memory can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
