Charles Gregory 'Greg' Hicks

Passed in: Glace Bay
Passed on: April 15th, 2016

It is with broken hearts and profound sadness that we the family of Charles Gregory 'Greg' Hicks, 66, announce his passing on April 15, 2016 at home , as per his wishes, surrounded by his loving family and cherished dog, Pepper.
All who knew Greg, knew him as a kind, generous, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, who enjoyed spending time, and many laughs with his family and friends.
Greg was the son of the late Tom and Annie (MacPherson) Hicks.
Greg was the loving husband of 48 years to Frances (Frankie) Wall, beloved and adored father of Lisa Mombourquette (Jody MacIsaac), Greg (Erin) and Bradley (Heidi). He was also the very proud grandfather of Josh Mombourquette, Jarret, Adam and Jordan Hicks and William and Kendra Hicks. Greg is also survived by his loving sisters Margaret (Blake) Smale, Ottawa, Myrna (Leonard) Carr, Bedford and sister by choice (his cousin) Dena (Sam) Wareham. He will be dearly missed by nieces, nephews and extended family.
Beside his parents Greg was predeceased by a brother William in infancy.
At the age of 10, Greg could be seen at the UMW Hall where he learned the working, joys and sorrows of the Cape Breton coal miners. When not running errands for the executive he would listen intensively to the current issues and spent the next several years grooming himself to be a coal miner, as well as an advocate for their concerns. He severed as president of local 4520 UMW helping his fellow miners in times of strife and sorrow. Greg also worked on the Worker Compensation Board in Halifax.
Greg was well known in the sports circle starting from Little League, continuing on with intermediate ball to Senior A Softball. Greg coached and played for many teams. He was also an accomplished hockey player. Greg’s lifelong dedication and success in sports was recognized by his induction into the Cape Breton Sports Hall of Fame in June 2015 as coach of the Glace Bay Mark 10 Jr Baseball team.
During his retirement years Greg was a well known and loved Glace Bay taxi driver. He took great pride in seeing all of his passengers arrive safely at their destination. Many of these passengers soon became his friends.
We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the VON and Palliative care team who were so instrumental in helping us keep Greg at home.
Respecting Greg’s final wishes, cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Patten Funeral Home Glace Bay. There will be no visitation or funeral services. As in Greg’s own words “Case Closed”.
