Sophie Hessler

HESSLER: Sophie (nee Deobald) of Herbert, SK passed away peacefully at the Herbert Hospital on February 13, 2016 after a brief illness. Sophie was born to the late Conrad and Katherine Deobald (Huber) on August 21, 1921 on the Heffel farm near the Zion Lutheran Church at Flowing Well, SK. She spent all of her life in and around Kelstern/Morse, SK areas. She met the love of her life and married Walter Hessler on May 11, 1941 at Zion Lutheran Church where she also had been baptized and confirmed. They lived on the Wittal farm south of Ernfold, SK before moving five miles north of Kelstern and farmed there. They bought a house in Morse in 1967 and farmed until 1993 when they sold and permanently retired in Morse. While on the farm Sophie had a big garden, raised chickens, ducks and geese and milked cows. During harvest time she was Walters's right hand man hauling grain. Sophie was a very good cook and one of her roast ducks was always a highlight. She had a vast collection of cook books and magazine clippings so you could be sure that there was always a new creation or two to try. Her buns and bread were the best as well as the sugar coated Krepple she would often have frozen in bags in the deep freeze. When the grandchildren grew up there was always an ice cream pail full of goodies to send along home with them. After Walter and Sophie moved to Morse, they would spend summers on the farm until they sold and had their farm auction. Auction sales were a favorite of Sophie's. The local auctioneers loved it when Sophie attended because you could be sure if the auctioneer could not get a bid, Sophie would start it. The grandkids would be given stuff because her saying was "I got it so cheap, thought maybe somebody could use it". After Walter passed away in November of 2014, Sophie made her home in the Herbert Heritage Manor where she was treated royally, which she enjoyed right up to her passing. During this time she sold their family home in Morse and had a house hold auction of the many treasures that were collected over the years. Sophie is survived by her daughter Shirley Stangland and her children, Gene (Angela) Stangland and their family, Dexter Stangland (Kat Stott, Chloe and Jaxon), Cody Stangland (Shanna and Bella Yu), Dakota Stangland (Mike Tadjdeh and Blakely); Keith Stangland, Kathy (Gerald) Watson, Lana (Wade) Empey and their family Bailey (Andy) Johnston and Shanna Empey; her daughter Sharon (Mervin) Stanley and their children Leslie (Paul) Seiracki and their children Lindsey and Breanna Seriacki; Terrill Stanley and her family Sophia Stanley (Vienna); her sisters Paulina Weppler and Christine Shelpley; brother-in-law Raymond Hessler; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her husband Walter Hessler; son-in-law Jerry Stangland; parents Conrad and Katherine Deobald; siblings Elsie and Alex Spate, Conrad and Emma Deobald, William and Sophie Deobald, Albert and Martha Deobald, John and Marie Deobald, Leo and Margaret Deobald, Lilly and William Roh, George and Luella Deobald, Harold Shepley, Dave Weinbender, Jim Weppler, Ruth and Fred Vold, Jack and Hilde Unterscher, Bill Parker, Evelyn Hessler, and Marvel Hessler; and parents-in-law Richard and Augustine Hessler.
