Lois Skiffington

SKIFFINGTON, LOIS ARLINE
(1920 - 2016)
Lois Skiffington passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Tuesday, April 12, 2016. She was born at the family home on March 26, 1920 in East Hampton, Connecticut, USA, the daughter of Lenora (Huntington) and Edward Wilcox. Lois was the second youngest of eleven children. Her older brother, Alton, is her only surviving sibling and is 99 years old.
Lois grew up in East Hampton and following graduation from high school and business college, she worked at The Stanley Tool & Die Company until the outbreak of World War II when she worked at an induction center for US servicemen. In 1944, Lois married her life long partner, Edmund Skiffington Jr., who was enlisted in the US Navy during the war years. Lois and Ed moved to Moncton, NB in 1957 where they remained and raised their family. Lois was the “good woman” behind the “successful man” supporting Ed in numerous ways, through his college years and several early moves with their young children, and during “Skiff’s” busy coaching career at Moncton High School and into retirement. Her high level of organization and attention to detail enabled them to remain in their Lower Coverdale home well into their 80’s.
Lois was a homemaker and “stay at home” mom for her four children until 1969 at which time she commenced volunteering at The Moncton Hospital. She committed 700 hours to volunteering at this time. In 1985, she returned to volunteering with her husband after several years absence and became a regular “cuddler” in the nursery as well as fulfilling many other tasks as a volunteer. During this time, Lois also commenced working at the Eaton’s store in Highfield Square in Moncton where she worked for many years. After Lois and Ed retired from their respective jobs “on the same day”, they decided to further their volunteering services by becoming members of the Organ Transport Team by transporting organs from The Moncton Hospital to the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, NS. Lois was a “second pair of eyes” for Ed as they often had to travel in the middle of the night and on one occasion, through a major snowstorm. In addition to the above, Lois attended the United Church in Harrisville, Lower Coverdale, and the Trinity United Church in Gunningsville, and was a member of the UCW. As well, Lois was a long standing member of the Lower Coverdale chapter of the Women’s Institute and achieved a Life Membership in this organization. In 2010, Lois was recognised by the Riverview Seniors Club for her personal commitment to the local community with a Certificate of Appreciation. Lois and Ed travelled across the country on several occasions and spent time in Florida during their retirement.
Lois and her husband moved from their home to Lakeview Tower in Riverview in 2010. When assisted living was necessary, Lois moved to McNair Manor and then to The Briarlea in Moncton. Prior to falling ill in March, she was often seen energetically cruising the halls at The Briarlea with her walker. She retained a sharp mind and made a point of trying to remember people’s names, even those of mere acquaintances. She had a good sense of humour, a positive outlook on life, and was considered to be a bit of a “character” at times.
Lois will be truly missed by her daughter, Sandra Rivenbark, and her sons Edmund (Trudy) Skiffington, Gordon (Debbie Himpe) Skiffington, and Keith Skiffington (Joanne Williams). She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren Leigh, Jennifer, Sara, Sam, Bud, Tedmund, and Halley, and her great-grandchildren Tyler, Maddison, Fallon, and Savannah.
The family is very grateful for the care given to Lois by the staff at McNair Manor and The Briarlea, by Dr. Sylvie LeBlanc and her colleagues, and lastly by the nurses on the 4600 unit and the palliative care unit at The Moncton Hospital. We also want to mention the people who visited with Lois when she was hospitalized.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Fair Haven Funeral Home, 1177 Salisbury Road, Moncton, NB. The service of celebration of Lois’ life will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 1:00PM. Following the internment of the remains to Serenity Niche, a reception will follow in the garden room at Fair Haven Memorial Gardens.
For those who wish, a donation to The Moncton Hospital or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
