It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dearly loved father, grandfather, brother, and great-grandfather on Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at his home on Phalen’s Road, where he lived for the last 46 years. Joe was 80 years young.
Born in Glace Bay, and a former resident of Highland Street, he was the son of the late Walter and Cecilia (Gilday) Lawrence. Joe began working at a young age delivering milk from Maple Grove Dairy. At age 17 he started working in Broughton Four Star Mine as a coal miner and then later with Devco as a mechanical fitter/welder at the Glace Bay Central shops for over 20 years.
Joe retired in 1992 and enjoyed many years with his wife and family at his favourite place “Out on the Mira” at the bungalow where he enjoyed 56 years of family and many wonderful times with friends. Dad was a kind and caring man with a wonderful sense of humor. He was always busy, whether he was fixing cars, replacing roofs, or plowing snow, his hands were never still.
He enjoyed several hobbies, his favourite being darts. He and Mom spent many years playing darts at the McKay’s Corner Dart League and also the Reserve Pensioners Club where he made many wonderful friends. Dad also loved to play cards with his grandchildren. He could be found walking Phalen’s Road daily and always had time to stop and chat.
Joe is survived by his daughter Joanne (John Phalen), four sons Keith (Murray) Lawrence-Williamson. London, Ont., Ronnie (Alison), Scott (Cathy) Glace Bay and Michael (Elsbeth) Lorne. He will be greatly missed by grandchildren Catherine (Greg), Christopher, Trevor, Kyle, Aidan, Jenna (Mason), James and Samual; one great-grandchild Ella-Joe. Also survived by four brothers Bill (Betty), Raymond (Anne), Teddy (Brenda), Darrell (AnnMarie); sisters Jeanette and Paul Quellette, B.C. Marie Koziel (late Billie), Anne and David Maclean, Barbara Morrison (late Sandy), Joan and Stephen Churney and many nieces and nephews. Also survived by his Aunt Ruth Taylor and Uncle Jim Gilday both of London Ontario.
Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by his wife Elsie (Brufatto) in 2005, twin brothers Douglas and Michael and Duncan, sister Betty and brothers-in-law James MacKenzie, Sandy Morrison, Bill Koziel, sister-in-law Irene Lawrence, as well as his in-laws Richard and Cordella Brufatto.
Visitation will be held on Sunday April 24, 2016 from 5-9 p.m. at Curry’s Funeral Home, Main Street, Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Fr. Boudreau will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 25 at St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, reception is to follow at church hall. Interment will be held at a later date at St. Joseph Holy Family Cemetery.
