Grace ‘Ruth’ (Baker) Macaulay, 96, of Baddeck, passed away on April 19, 2016 at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Middle Musquodoboit, N.S. on Jan. 18, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Arthur F. and Mary Baker. Ruth was a graduate of Mt. Allison University and moved to Baddeck in 1942 as the Home Economics teacher at the old Baddeck Academy. In 1943, she moved to Dartmouth, N.S. to teach for a year and then returned to Baddeck as the Supervisor of 4H Programs for the N.S. Department of Agriculture the following year. In 1948 she married and remained in Baddeck until her passing.
She was a member and past elder of Greenwood United Church, and a life member of the Alexander Graham Bell Club, Greenwood UCW, Mt. Allison University Alumnae, and the Canadian Bible Society.
Ruth is survived by her son, Gordon (Doreen) Macaulay and daughter, Suzanne (Earl) MacDonald; brother, Donald (Winnie) Baker, Summerside, P.E.I. and sister-in-law, Evelyn Macaulay, Baddeck. Also surviving are grandchildren, Christopher (DeDe) Fraser, Jeanette (David) Layes, Jonathan MacDonald, Shauna Macaulay (Matt) and Kimberley Macaulay (Darcy). Great grandchildren, Shamus, Grace, Sam, William, Ryder, Max, Camryn and Maddox, along with many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, D.W. Gordon; brother, Blair Baker; sister-in-law, Doris Baker and nephew, Donnie Baker.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Alderwood Rest Home and the doctors and staff of the Victoria County Memorial Hospital for the kind and compassionate care Mom received over the past six years.
In keeping with Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place under the direction of MacAskill’s Funeral Home and there will be no visitation. A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held at Greenwood United Church on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at 3 p.m. with Rev Alison Etter officiating and a reception to follow.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Greenwood Church Memorial Building Fund or the charity of one’s choice.
Goodbye my family, my life is past.
I loved you all to the very last.
Weep not for me, but courage take.
Love each other, for my sake.
For those you love don’t go away,
They walk beside you every day.
