George Waud

Passed on: April 29th, 2016

George William ‘Bill’ passed away peacefully on Friday, April 29, 2016. The only child of William and Eliza Waud, immigrants from East Yorkshire, Bill was born at Conquest in June 1923 and raised Outlook, Saskatchewan. Bill was the ultimate ‘car-guy’ buying his first car at age 15 with money he made working in a garage in Outlook. His career and retirement were all about ‘fixing up’ cars. He kept photos of his first car and last pickup truck and most in-between. Bill moved to Moose Jaw in 1940 and attended the Youth Training School where he learned to be an Aero-engine mechanic. In June 1941 he joined the RCAF and because he was a mechanic was promoted to AC2 and posted to No. 5 Bombing and Gunnery School at Dafoe, SK. In May 1943 he was posted overseas and served at Topcliff with Bomber Command in Yorkshire working on his favorite aircraft, the Halifax Bomber. Bill returned to Moose Jaw in 1945, rented a small apartment on High Street and went to work as a mechanic for Elliot Motors. He married Mary Ackerman in 1949 and they had two children, Shirley and Terry. In 1958 Bill went to work at S.I.A.S.T. teaching auto-body. In 1963 he joined the staff of A.E. Peacock High School teaching mechanics and auto-body. He retired from Peacock in 1986. Bill’s wife Mary passed away in 2013. Their son Terry passed away in 1974. Bill is survived by his daughter Shirley Waud; three grandchildren, Rick (Cindy) Lavallee, Brian (Michelle) Lavallee and Michelle (Matt) Heisler, and eight great-grandchildren. Bill and Mary had a special connection to their oldest grandson Rick. They loved it when Rick and his family came for a visit at their house on Algoma Avenue, always carrying a bucket of Fried Chicken. Bill enjoyed a good time but was a serious man. He was hard working, dedicated to his craft and expected others to be as dedicated. He will be especially missed by his daughter Shirley who loved and cherished her father – and by Richard. A family memorial will be held at Rosedale Cemetery in early summer. For those so wishing, donations to the M.S. Society, 150 Albert St., Regina, S4R 2N2, would be appreciated. In living memory of Bill, a memorial planting will be made by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Please sign the memorial register at website: www.wjjonesandson.com (Obituaries).
