Born In: Sydney
Born: January 1st, 1923

Passed in: Sydney
Passed on: May 5th, 2016

Our mother passed away peacefully in the early hours of May 5, 2016 at Harbourstone Enhanced Care with all of her children present.
Born Jan. 1, 1923 in Sydney, Mom was the last surviving member of the Union Street Almons.
Daughter of the late Strickland and Mary Ann (MacDonald) Almon, she was predeceased by her second mother, Julia (Whalen) Almon; brothers, Danny Almon (Marge), Michael Almon (Alice), Tessie MacDonald (Mickey) and Evelyn MacDonald (Danny).
She was also recently predeceased by her soul mate and love of her life Walter MacKinnon. Married for 65 years, they were barely apart a day in their long and loving marriage.
Prior to her marriage in 1949, Genevieve worked in Toronto for Mike’s Directory as a telephone operator, and later as a receptionist for the Dept. of National Defence in Point Edward.
Genevieve was foremost a lady in all ways, a gentle compassionate woman who loved all living things, her husband and children most of all. She was the kind of lady who put Vaseline on the cat’s paws because she was worried their paws would get chapped in the winter months.
She will be remembered for her elegance, her fierce protectiveness of those she loved and her strawberry-rhubarb pie.
She is survived by her children, Gary MacKinnon (Louise Williams, deceased), Blair MacKinnon (Guy Preville), Jennifer MacKinnon, Ursula MacKinnon (Bill Penney) and her grandson, Peter Blair MacKinnon Nicholson.
The family would like to thank her special caregivers Ann and Mary Vassalo, Darlene Watson and the home care team from Continuing Care N.S. that allowed us to keep Mom in her Columbia Street home for as long as possible. And finally, the loving staff at Harbourstone who made her final year comfortable and homey.
Mom’s goodbye will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. Visitation will take place on Friday, May 6 from 4-6 p.m.
Funeral service will take place on Saturday, May 7 at 3 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of N.S.
