It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, June Beryl Rutledge, age 87, on Friday, May 6, 2016, at Richmond Villa Long Term Care Facility, St. Peter’s, Cape Breton, N.S.
Born in London, England, June was the daughter of the late Arthur Harry and Florence Caroline (nee Yallop) Trickett, also of London England.
She was predeceased by her husband, Leslie Albert Rutledge of Fourchu, Cape Breton and siblings, Edmund, Miriam (George), Roy (Isabel) and Noel (Joyce), all of London.
June was a full time mother and then school worker in England, who came to Cape Breton in 1977, with her husband, Leslie on his retirement. Leslie had been a fisherman and lighthouse keeper in Fourchu who went to England with the Canadian Army in the Second World War met and married June, then stayed to raise their family and become a foreman decorator. June was a wonderful mother in hard times, who always put the family first and did a great job raising the children despite many difficulties. June fell in love with Cape Breton, particularly Fourchu, but, especially Leslie's local family and friends, such that, 12 years after his death, when her children moved her back to England in 2003, she returned just three months later to live out her life just enjoying the community and knitting. Cape Breton had become her true home and we understand that.
Her family would like to sincerely thank those wonderful local members of Leslie’s family and friends, as well as the wonderful staff of both, the Richmond County Day Care team and Richmond Villa Long Term Care Facility for the warmth, friendship and great care bestowed on June throughout her time here, but particularly the last 10 years. She truly loved you all.
June is survived by all her UK based family who remained ever in her thoughts despite varying contact: daughter, Carol and son, Stephen (Julie and former wife, Christine); grandchildren, Claire Butcher, Emma (Richard) Mancini, Benjamin (Drazena) Rutledge, Thomas (Zara) Rutledge, Nicholas (Sally) Rutledge, Elizabeth Rutledge and Michael Rutledge; great-grandchildren, Isabella Mancini and Harry Charles Susa-Rutledge (born March 11, 2016); numerous nephews and nieces, including Graham (Janet) and family.
Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held at Fourchu United Church on Thursday, July 28, 2016, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Nancy Whitney-Latham officiating. Interment (with Leslie) will be at Little Hill Cemetery, Fourchu.
