Age 80, of Cole Harbour passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at the Dartmouth General Hospital, May 6, 2016.
Born July 7, 1935 in Glace Bay, raised in Louisbourg, Cape Breton.
The eldest son of the late William Kiely MacDonald and Kathleen (Pope).
Kiely is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Leona (Gallant). Besides his wife he is survived by his son, Bill (Carol); daughters, Denise (Bernie), Leslie (Kelvin) Campbell; grandchildren, Meghan, Amanda, Michael, Nicole, Hannah and Parker; siblings, Alan, Robert, Conrad, Colleen (Marple), and Michael.
Predeceased by his brother Kevin.
Kiely was employed in the fish processing industry of National Sea Products for four years after high school graduation. He graduated Sir George Williams (now Concordia University) with a BSc in physics and mathematics. He was recruited by the Department of Transport, Meteorological Branch, where he studied theoretical and applied meteorology. Subsequent postings, as a meteorologist, included RCAF bases at Trenton, Ont.; St-Hubert, Que.; Bagotville, Que.; Fort Churchill, Man.; Summerside, PEI and Shearwater, N.S. Selected for officer’s training, he attended RCAF Officer’s Training School and graduated with a short service commission to serve with the RCAF and Canadian Forces in France and Germany. On return to Canada and civilian life he served in several supervisory and management positions with Environment Canada. He retired from Maritime Command as a senior staff officer responsible for Environmental Affairs.
Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 11, 2016 from Saint John XXIII Parish, 35 Colby Dr., Dartmouth with Fr. Owen Connolly officiating and reception will follow. Cremation has taken place. Private interment will take place later in the day.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint John XXIII Parish Building Fund, 35 Colby Dr., Dartmouth, N.S., B2B 1N7.
