Dr. John “Allan” MacKay, DVM age 92 of Valley View Villa, Riverton and formerly of Carmichael Street , New Glasgow passed away with his family at his side on Saturday, May 7, 2016 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born January 29th, 1924 in Heathbell, Pictou County. He was a twin son of the late Alexander H. (Allie) and Euphemia Elizabeth MacKay.
Dr. Allan received his primary education at Heathbell School and his secondary education at Pictou Academy graduating in 1941. He graduated from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro in 1943 and obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph in 1951. That same year he established a practice in Pictou County and continued his work until his retirement in 1989.
In 1988 Dr. Allan was honored as Pictou County Man of the Year. He was the first recipient of this award.
Dr. Allan maintained an active interest in 4-H Club work and in 1989 he became a member of the 4-H 500 Club.
In 1992 he was nominated by the Pictou North Colchester Federation of Agriculture to be inducted into the Atlantic Agriculture Hall of Fame.
Dr. Allan was always an active supporter of farm organizations and agricultural exhibits.
He served on the board of directors of the Pictou North Colchester Exhibition. He also served on the executive council of the N.S. Veterinary Medical Association. He was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church, Scotsburn and an adherent of the Bridgeville United Church. He was also a member of Clan Donald.
In 2013 Dr. Allan received a 40 year veteran member pin from the Central Nova Holstein Club for accumulating 42 years as a member and 30 years as breeder.
Dr. Allan was predeceased by his wife of 25 years, Barbara (MacDonald) (Clark) MacKay, his elder brother Donald Gordon MacKay.
Surviving are Donald’s wife Sylvia of Scotsburn, their children Gordon and Marion and Marion’s daughter Elizabeth. Also his twin brother Allister MacKenzie MacKay and wife Ruth Arlene of Virginia Beach, Va., their children, Elizabeth, Bill, Ian, Kathleen and their families. He is also survived by Barbara’s son David Clark and wife Beverly of Oxford, their children Jennifer and Donald, and by Barbara’s daughter, Mary-Beth Arima and her husband Toshi of Toronto, Ont.
Dr. Allan is also survived by special friends John and Helen MacLeod and family
A thank you to the special nurses at the Aberdeen Hospital for the care Dr. Allan received in his short time there.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Tuesday, May 10th, 2016 in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, 256 King Street, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. on Wednesday May 11, 2016 in Bethel Presbyterian Church, Scotsburn with Rev. Lara Scholey officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery, Scotsburn.
Donations in memory of Dr. Allan may be made to the Valley View Villa, Recreation Dept .
