Stanley Joseph Hughes

Born In: Maple Ontario

Passed on: May 11th, 2016

Passed away peacefully in his home, on Wednesday May 11, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Maple, Ont. to the late Stan and Mary Hughes, Stan spent the last number of years residing in Truro before moving to Cape Breton.
Stan spent his childhood years in Toronto and from meager beginnings, he carved out a life for himself and for those he loved. As a young man delivering newspapers and sweeping floors in convenience stores, Stan worked his way through the ranks, never letting any obstacle get in his way, to become general manager of the once famous Mac’s Convenience Stores of Ontario. Stan was referred to as the “Golden Boy of Mac’s”. He was then sought out to take on the position of vice president of Sobeys/Needs Convenience Stores of Atlantic Canada, where he pioneered many ideas that are still in use to this day and was given countless awards for his contributions. Stan was a passionate man with a tremendous work ethic and a keen ability to inspire others to achieve goals. During his time working in the retail industry, Stan was credited to be the force behind countless successes, not the least of which being the creation of the Truro Power Centre, which Stan considered to be his business legacy. “Papa Stan”, as he was known to his children and grandchildren, loved his family and would always remark on how lucky and how proud he was to have the love of so many. As an amateur chef and expert host, Stan’s family enjoyed many hours in his kitchen, or at his patio table, while Stan tested out new recipes and pulled goodies from out of the oven or fresh off the barbecue. Stan also had an insatiable desire for books and knowledge and could devour a good true crime novel in a matter of hours. In his retirement years, Stan enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, taking pride in his property and walking his flower gardens with his wife Arlene. Stan was known for his random acts of kindness and generosity and was always thinking about how he could help others.
Stan’s presence will be greatly missed and his life will be celebrated by his loving wife, soulmate and best friend, Arlene; his children Bradley (Brynn) Hughes, Sandra (David) McLaughlin, Jennifer (Stephen) Sheppard, Erin (Eddie) Turner, Dennis (Lyndsay) Sheppard and Nathan (Ashley) McDonald and his grandchildren, Meaghan, Breanna, Jeremy, Jordan, Elise, Tristan, Chloe, Ethan, Cameron and Skylar.
Stan was predeceased by his sister, Agnes and brother, Johnny.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. in the Chants Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, May 13, 2016. with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Palliative Care Service of Cape Breton.
