Born: December 1st, 1943

Passed in: Coxheath
Passed on: May 12th, 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Ann Bennett, Coxheath, on Thursday, May 12, 2016.
Shirley passed at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, following complications post surgery, despite the compassionate care of the wonderful staff in the ICU 5.2 unit.
Born Dec. 1, 1943, Shirley was the eldest daughter of the late Mildred and Michael Ratchford.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 50 years, Brian F. Bennett; son, Michael; daughter-in-law, Ericka; and their three beautiful boys, Logan, Liam and Lochlan, who were a constant source of joy and happiness. Also surviving is daughter-in-law Bisa Bennett, grandson Michael, and granddaughter, Tijana. Shirley leaves behind sisters Donna Quinn (Steve) and Phyllis Rudderham (the late John); with whom she shared a very special bond.
Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her eldest son, Christopher.
A graduate of St. Rita’s Hospital School of Nursing, Shirley spent decades working as an X-ray technician. Over the span of her career, Shirley’s kindness, positivity, and compassion resulted in life-long friendships with her colleagues. She would tell you that her best career years were spent travelling on the province’s first mobile mammography unit. Shirley loved her job, and loved helping people, which was evident to the many women she met through the breast screening program.
A force to be reckoned with in the kitchen, Shirley will be forever remembered for her homemade pizza and her inability to let someone leave her house empty handed. She was deeply loved and will be deeply missed.
Visitation for Shirley will be held at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home , 564 Alexandra S., Sydney‬ ‪on Tuesday, May 17, from 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral Home ‪on Wednesday, May 18, at 11 a.m.‬, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating.
Donations may be made in Shirley’s memory to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
